Any of y'all fish for Savannah River striped bass from your kayaks? I've got a few striper fishing buddies of all different types - some with saltwater striper fishing boats, some without, some with yaks - but all fly anglers. Apparently they seem to believe the Savannah River is a place where they may be able to catch a respectable striped bass during the winter. I tried to tell them that there are no stripers in the Savannah River...just a few dogfish, the rare sea trout, and some black tip sharks. But they didn't believe me.
So I got to thinking: I wonder if any of the guys on CGKF fish the tributaries like the Back, etc. from the kayaks for stripers? That could be a lot of fun if you lay into a big river-raised striped bass on a fly rod in a kayak!

Ken There are some big stripers caught in the Back River every year. If there was a decent place to launch a yak, it would be do-able. The main river channel is NOT a place that I would try, EVER! There is a place just across the bridge going across the Back River where there is an old fireworks place on the right. There is a small creek that goes right out into the Back River. It might be a place that you could launch from but I'm not positive. Around January the bite should be picking up, generally the nastier the day the better from what I've picked up from some of the people that target them.

No, I don't think the main river channel is a kayak-friendly environment at least until you get way upstream. And I don't even know about that - just leaving the possibility open because I haven't seen it. Thanks for the 411.
