I've still got to find a house and get moved in and settled down. But I want to start the discussion and find out who would be interested in attending a free fly casting seminar if I put one on. Also, what day works best for everyone?
I do up to 6 people in a class. More than that and I believe quality of instruction suffers due to lack of individual attention.
The intro class is about 6 hours with plenty of breaks, including a 1 hour break in the middle.
We will cover terminology, rods, reels, lines, leaders, the essentials of a good fly cast, the roll cast, and the overhead cast.
We will cover all of this for fresh and saltwater applications. The only difference is for the tackle.
The goals of this course will be:
1. To introduce new and novice fly casters to fundamentally sound fly casting methods they can immediately use to fish.
2. To teach proper casting fundamentals to novice and intermediate casters who are struggling with issues in order to correct casting faults and create a solid foundation upon which they can build advanced casting skills in the future.
3. To have fun. This is actually always my first priority. If it isn't fun, I quit!
If you would like to attend this free seminar, reply to this post with the best day of the week for you to attend and how much advanced notice you need to make plans to attend. Also indicate whether or not you own a fly rod already and how long you have been fly fishing.
Thanks!
P.S. I do not usually teach for free. I am doing this as an introductory sort of thing, being a newcomer to the community. My normal rates are:
Private lessons: $60/hour or $250/day Group classes: $50/person Certification courses: $75/person AFFP Examination: $275/person Club Seminar/Workshop/Presentation Appearance: $300/day

Ken That is mighty nice of you to help fellow forum members out this way. This is what the site is all about. I would like to join you and most of my time is open. I have a 9wt rod and have had it for 4-5 years. I have never fished with it.

My son has a 7/8 wgt. (I think), never fished with it. I am available on some Saturdays and Sunday afternoons when I'm not doing seminars myself or fishing in tournaments. Thanks for offering your knowledge and time!

Well, we found a house today. We can move in on Friday if our movers get here by then. They're supposed to arrive Wednesday. So things are moving faster than expected.
I've got a big fly tying room in the new pad plus a 2-car garage (and only 1 car and a motorcycle). Big yard w/privacy fence. And 2 extra bedrooms and bathroom on 1 end of the house we won't use. So I think I'm in good shape as far as the fly fishing setup goes.
In a couple of weeks we can probably try and put this thing on the calendar for sometime in April.

Well, I'll get up to Bass Pro Shops soon and talk to them about hosting. I usually use their facilities for these things. Once I know what their calendar looks like, I'll have a better idea of when we can put something together.

After visiting the Bass Pro store in Savannah, it's apparent that they don't have an area suitable for casting. So I'll have to find a good park or ball field we can use. Any suggestions. One with a pond with a gentle sloping, clear bank would be good for roll casting. But we also need about 1/4 of a football field size grassy area with no trees, power lines, or fences running through it. It needs to be flat. Someplace easy for y'all to get to would be ideal, of course.

Ken we can check on Daffin Park. It is in midtown at Waters Ave. and Victory Drive. It belongs to the city but that should not be a problem.

If you fellas wouldn't mind contacting the folks about those two locations and getting the details about what we'd need to do to reserve time/space or just use the facilities there and get in touch with me, that would be a huge help...because I have NO IDEA where you're talking about.
Once I have the 411, then I can nail it down and we'll light this candle.

Hi Ken! Trey told me about you at our Coffee Bluff seminar on 3/26. I'm a fly fisher who is just getting into kayak fishing here on the coast(altho I've live here for 40 years!). Been a fresh water trout guy for 20+ years. I have about 15 years experience with two handed spey rods(steelheading), and now two handed switch rods, so I'd be happy to help with your classes. I in NO WAY consider myself 'instructor grade', but I would be willing to do what I can for your classes if you ever need some bodies. Trey on Saturday said you'd be the one to contact about fly rod presentation problems/recs from a kayak. Good to have you here.

I suppose that when we begin to honestly consider ourselves "instructor grade," we're probably losing our effectiveness as teachers. I honestly believe that teaching/coaching should always be a humbling experience of the "if they only knew I'm not worthy" variety. I am a real newcomer to two-handed fly casting. So your experience in this specialty will be a great addition and very welcome! I have caught a couple of fish on a switch rod, but I mostly use them for overhead casting with Airflo 40+ modified shooting head lines. But I use some roll and spey casts on lakes to fish for bass. We should get together soon. I'd be happy to help you with modifying your casting technique for the kayak, rigging a kayak for fly fishing (it IS different), fly fishing tactics from a kayak, and all that jazz...cuz it's all different than either fly fishing from other boats (except canoes) or from kayak fishing with conventional tackle. And you can probably help me a LOT with the two-handed rods!

I have to apologize for not getting info on Tom Tripplet park today. My wife had hail damage during yesterday's storm. She has UsAA and we have to jump thru hoops to get an adjuster out! I will try to get some info together after I get her taken care of!

Gang,
I know I said I'd do this in March or April, and that's what I will do. But on May 5th we're heading to FL for a month. And I've already got 6 paying students here without any effort. Added to my students who are now coming here from other areas (having 2 extra bedrooms w/bathroom and living in an area w/good fishing is a good thing for biz) and a couple of new "fly fishing pals" from down in St. Simons, my dance card is pretty full. Since it's prob too late to put it on the map near you before I leave for FL, we'll have to start over under different terms if some of y'all do want help with your casting. But if y'all can come up with a time and place that works, I'll be there to keep my word.

That's cool, Kevin. I'll have to charge a fee this next go around, but it will be LOW. And I'll probably open it up to 10-12 people. There are folks from Ft. Stewart and even other parts of GA who want to attend...more than the 6 I said I'd cap it at initially. That's the point behind the modest registration fee: you find out who is serious and you don't waste spots on no-shows that could have gone to someone who would have been there. I'll donate the $$$ to AFFI. That way I'm personally still doing the one seminar without getting paid for it. That's as close to free as I can justify at this point without someone ending up being treated unfairly and missing an opportunity they wanted.
If you coordinate the date/location aspect (subject to my final approval, of course), then your participation is naturally gratis.
Just so everyone knows, I'm thinking along the lines of $20/person, $15 for a parent-child type duo. Yes, that's $5 LESS for 2 people than it is for 1 person...so long as person #2 is your kid, nephew/niece, or grandkid. I am an Ambassador for more than one of the big "take kids fishing" programs.
