Discovery Channel has a new show out called Pacific Warriors, kayak fishing in Hawaii. The basic premise is offshore fishing in Hawaii, with a couple guys selling their catch to local fish markets (Discovery adds the total up each episode a la Deadliest Catch). Some of the show is entertaining, and interesting to me since the fishing is different from what we do.
I dvr'd the first episode and I recently watched it. While the camera work is awesome, as anyone would expect from Discovery, at times I found it irritating. Firstly the continuity is terrible. Close up to a spinning reel setup with drag going crazy to the guy using a conventional set up. Even the kayak change during shots.
Secondly the reality TV stick is old. They manufacture drama. While fishing offshore in big water is pretty exciting itself, I feel they sometimes make some of the drama up. Especially with the interactions of the fisherman themselves.
My last gripe is the fact that a bunch of the guys aren't wearing PFD's. Thats just silly, especially the type of fishing they do.
While I know some of the things they do are to make the show more entertaining, I am curious what impact this will have with bringing the sport to the mainstream.

I've watched a couple episodes and have some of the same opinions. There is also a Hobie team member on the show. Some fishermen that fish big waters choose not to wear a PFD due to having to swim faster (when required), dive under water for various reasons, and most (if not all) were as at ease in the water as walking down a sidewalk. Sure there are times that we are assured that they should be wearing a PFD, but they are just rolling along as apart of their culture. Discovery should have a disclaimer about the PFD use, if they don't.
