OK, so I use braid on all of my inshore and freshwater spinning reels. I found myself in need of respelling a few reels and cringed when I realized what it was going to cost for all new braid.
So...I have always been tempted by the "Cheap Chinese" braid that you can find on ebay. (disclaimer; I would gladly buy American...if it were an option. I am coming at this from the viewpoint that most, if not all of the braids on the market, are made outside of the US)
I went ahead and took a gamble and got a 1500M spool of 20# braid. I opted for the 8 strand braid basically because I had used 8 strand on one other reel before and loved it. Rounder, smoother, and seemed to cast further.
I typically use 15# braid, but bought the 20# just to be safe. The 8 strand had a really nice threadlike feel and has zero stiffness compared to the others.
I Just did a strength test in my office. I compared 15# Suffix, 20# Power Pro, and the "cheap" ebay stuff which was 20# 8strand.
I used fresh line off of a spool. Tied each end of a 2' section of braid to a steel key ring using a Palomar knot. All of the breaks were midway in the line (none at the knot).
Here are the results:
15# Suffix: lifted 10lb, broke just as it was about to fully lift 15lb wt.
20# Power Pro: Lifted 10, 15, 20lb broke trying to lift 25lbs.
20# Ebay: Lifted 10, 15, 20lb broke trying to lift 25lbs.
$$$
as far as price, the average price for a spool of 300 yds is approx. $30
a 1500M spool of "cheap stuff" ($75) = 1,371.6 yards or 4.572 300 yard spools ($137).
That gives a savings of $62 or approximately 45%. (the savings are even better of you buy the 4strand which is even cheaper)
The verdict:
To me it was savings enough to warrant a try. I have yet to take it out on the water and give it a true test. I will let you know how it goes.
If I ever lose a fish because of it, I will be kicking myself...just thought it was worth a try. I may love it, I may regret it. Anyway I just had to find out for myself!
