Just curious if any of you store your yak outside. If so, do you do anything special to protect it?
I recently got a fence in my yard and I was planning of making a rack to hold the kayaks up. I was also going to place a tarp over the yak to try and keep dirt and what not off.
Anything else I need to do?

yeah with me having two yaks now. i have to store mine outside. what i do is turn mine over and leave one of the hatches off. were it can get air in it and it stays a lot cleaner with it turned over. but i need to build something for them. if you use google you will find a ton of ideas. been think of doing something like this. www.yakangler.com/forum/21-look-what-i-did/24610-yak-storage-stand

The tarp is a good idea, keeps the sunlight off the kayak. Too much sunlight will make the color fade/ discolor. If you go too long in between uses check for wasp nests or other critters if you leave a hatch open. Try and keep off the ground, but supported so you don't get oil canning (Mis-shaping due to the heat that warps the plastic).

I have a pvc rack that I place both my kayaks on. It's a space saver but it also protects the boats. I put a cover on the tarpon since it's rarely used and keep a spacer in between the kayak and the cover to keep air flow. All hatches stay open and I wipe it down once a month or so to keep it in decent condition. Baby oil works great, got that idea from a few guys on an ska forum

I have a covered porch area on the side of my garage. I had some extra 1/2" EMT laying around. I bent it into J hooks and mounted them to the side of the garage. I store my yaks on their sides. I used some pool noodles on the J hooks to help protect the kayak from denting in the hot weather.
However you store them. Keeping them out of the sun is a must. Exposing them to the Ga sun every day all day will cause them to fade, warp and dent.

If you have a privacy fence, make a lean-to type contraption. I'm about to make one on my fence. It's kinda hard to explain but I'm going to put mine on hinges so i can lift the roof part out of the way when I'm messing with the kayak.

We put both of ours in the garage but since they take up so much space we have a lift system where it holds them up next to the ceiling - hence not taking up the garage space! This has saved us from having to store them outside!
