I am new to the salt. I am planning on some ocean and inshore fishin I have 2 okuma conventor 20s lincounters reels, 1 penn squall 20 lincounter and a okuma trio spinning reel all on ugly stick striper rods. I also have various bait caster and spinning reels for bass fishing. I'm thinking I'm going to have to upgrade some of my gear especially the rods for I feel that are not powerful enough to handle fish over 50 lbs. I'll be buying soon so please give me suggestions on what I need to get. Again thanks guys!...D Novak

The majority of the inshore fish fall in the 15"-30" range and a medium fast action rod will do the trick. Fish of larger size will need a medium or medium heavy rod. It all depends on what type you are targeting; sharks, tarpon, or bull reds. I use 10 lb braid on my inshore rods and catch up to 30" reds on it. For the bigger fish I'll use 30-50 lb braid. Leader for inshore fishing is 20-30 lb fluorocarbon. Bigger fish is 80-100 lb shock leader. Other guys have different setups, but fairly similar. I use 2500 or 3000 sized reels for inshore and 5000 or 6000 for lager game. Hope this helps. Fishing from the yak you don't have to go as heavy as when fishing from a boat. I start smaller and go larger as needed.

3 spots pretty much covered it, after that your just looking at tackle. If you look through a few of the older posts and through the fishing reports you will see what baits we use, brand is up to the angler but I will tell you that I have good success with chartrues tails or orange tails for reds.
