This trip had a huge question mark on it! With the tropical storm blowing through and tons of fresh rain falling in our fishing grounds it was a recipe for disaster. Never the less, we (Troutman, Windknot, Backlash, and I) all headed North to Chuck town on Friday and scratched our heads standing in the 20-30 mph winds.
Backlash and Windknot camped North of Charleston while me and Troutman stayed in a nice air conditioned hotel in downtown. Silveryaker also made the trip and camped near the boys.
Friday evening we were going to meet up with some local yak fishermen and catch up, but I got a call from Windknot and we had to go where they were and assist them with a mechanical brain fart issue.
We pre-fished Saturday and were able to find some fish. Troutman caught around 30 trout with the upper size going up towards 19". I caught a few trout and then the winds kicked back up.
Sunday morning came early, we launched at 5:45 am and hoped for a good day. My first cast was eaten by a mid 20" red. As soon as he started ripping out drag my line popped.
I re-tied quickly and chased reds around half the morning, they just wouldn't eat. We probably saw 100 redfish that morning and some of them were huge! As the tide rose we ventured off in search of trout. Troutman and I landed scoring trout around 8:30 am and then went back in search of a redfish.
While waiting on some reds to come out of a creek I upgraded my trout with a 17 3/4" trout.
We fished as long as we could until we absolutely had to load up and get back to check in before the 3 pm deadline.
Windknot stated that they had their legal trout early and searched for a redfish. He had a very large red (probably in the 30-35" range) give him a sleigh ride and when he turned the hook came out. That must have sucked!
CGKF did good despite the fresh water and lack of redfish cooperation. Windknot won Junior Angler, I came in 11th, Troutman 13th, Backlash was 20th I believe.
We had a good time and can't wait for the Savannah leg of the IFA Kayak Tour in August.
