So I have been fishing from an open style light weight "file" crate for the past few years. It hasn't held up well to wear and tear. It started cracking where it was bungeed, and where the rod holders were mounted. I also had to keep my tackle in a bag that I had to lift in and out whenever I needed anything. Which I never liked. I always got tangled or hooked on something. I had seen the 2 tier crate with a lid on several forums and finally stumbled on some nice heavy duty crates. The bottom crate is essentially untouched (so far). The top section is another crate that had been cut in half. The lid is the base of a 3rd crate. That crate was damaged so it worked perfect for a lid. I drilled 1/4" holes and used zip ties as hinges. Not sure how long this will last, but I can make a better hinge if it doesn't hold up. Milk crates are slightly smaller than file crates, so they don't store as much gear. This is were the 2nd tier comes in handy. The crate will open to the side, so I can still mount my rod holders on the back side of the crate. The top section is deep enough to hold a large Plano Box. And still has plenty of room for other commonly used items. I still have to add the rod holders. And I plan on making some sort of tool rail. For pliers, ruler, fish grips etc... I will add more pictures as I continue the build.
