me being me......im looking at a couple yaks that are outside the box. if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated! the standard ol stand by: OK prowler or trident 13' and WS Tarpon 140 cant skip jacksons but a bit higher in $$$ cobra line up: marauder, navigator, FND. im worried the rear wont have enough room for cooler. Moken 12 or 13 www.feelfreekayak.com/products/moken12-angler/elie horizon 130 www.eliesport.com/products/sport-fishing-kayaks/horizon-130-angler.htmlelie and pelican are the same company but the elie line is a whole different story. build up is the only shared part. different quality parts and different hull designs. elie is the lexus to toyota as to pelican. elie has great reviews too! all are priced pretty equal at retail. used im going to be pretty restricted to WS and OK and Cobra. uses: i fish 2-3 times a week in back waters or open water in the surf. common to paddle up to 10 miles a day. beat the heck out it on rocks and oysters to where sea yak ppl stare in awe. i normally carry 2 rods, tackle and end up with up to 95# of fish in rear cooler on good days. im 5'9" and 135# soaking wet. lol. speed/efficiency is a huge concern of mine since i do paddle so far on some days, windy, tides, etc.... opinions.....let em fly! im all ears! (errrr.....eyes here i guess) thanks! Brandon

You know me....go Jackson Cuda 14. The second choice would be the Tarpon 140.

hi Brandon well for me its the ok prowler trident 13. love mine. just got to get more on saltwater usage. main thing with mine is the storage. i carry 3 rods but all ways have one in the hatch and then there is the weight part @ 56 pounds. i can pick this up with no problem at all. if i was to get another one it would be another ok either a ok pt 13 or the ultra 4.3

Good to hear domestics are the choice so far. Its what I was expecting since the elite and moken are not real available here

I don't think you can go wrong with that list! I love my ocean kayaks but want a Jackson Cuda 14.

Go with the Cuda 14 if you can spare the $$$. Heard great reviews and have seen them in action. Lots of room and tons of speed. I really want one, but my current situation will only allow me to get something more family friendly. Got my eye fixed on a certain someone's Big Tuna! Hopefully I can upgrade soon too.

no new yak yet. i just figured i'd update my decision process......
after mucho reading and researching ive decided to skip all thermoform yaks. i know thier typically faster and lighter than std poly boats that were all used to but.......im not entirely sold on thier ability to get beat up on oysters and rocks in the back waters. the material is much harder than poly, much more scratch proof but i am afraid that rocking waves while parked on a rake will destroy the hull faster.
if anyone can attest to either the durability or fragility of thermoform yaks then please chime in! i love the layout on a few ive seen, 14' boat at 44# cant be beat, great reviews too.

Well I have not been fishing on a yak for as long as some of the others on this site (Last year as in 2011) was my first year in a yak, but for me the Tarpon 140 is the best Yak for the the money. I have beat that thing up on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel in the Chesapeake Bay, the Back River and the York River in VA. I have ran over rocks,a turtle, an oyrster bar or two and pipes. Also i have had it rub and bounce off pylons with barnicals and some rebar under the bridge as I figured out what I was doing. I feel I would be hard pressed to find a more beat up and love Yak out there. I was speanding an average of 12 hours a week in that Tarpon paddleing, regularly, covering 5 to ten miles a pop all summer and part of the winter fishing the light lines. I have stood up in it, but those where very calm days in a creek the sitting back down proved very near impossable unless I wanted to swim. Well I hope this helps. And if you see a camo tarpon 140 with a zombie sticker on it, say hi.

Yep poly yaks can take that abuse. I'm definitely going to stick to that plan and see what I can find during off season here. I'm pretty sure that if lived in the gulf id go thermo but not with the way we bang them around here on oysters and pilings so much

I think you'd be better off with the poly (plastic) stuff, especially as much as you are beating it off pilings and oysters. Unlike many folks, I don't baby my yaks when I'm actually on the water. I'll drag it across anything to get to a fishy spot. I will give it a little TLC when I get back home just to help with it's longevity.

I love looking at Outdoor Stores and checking out all the new yaks. Money has always been my hang up. For me, yak fishing has always been an affordable way to fish. And when you start talking about yaks costing more than $1,000, it no longer has that "affordable" feel to it. That's why I always ended up with the Ocean Kayaks. They probably aren't the greatest kayaks for wanting bells and whistles, but you just can't beat the price of them. I wanted a Tarpon 140 back in the day. But how could I pass up an Ocean Kayak Prowler 15 brand new for $385? So that's what I got.
I love the looks and features of the Jackson Kayaks. But again.....price kills me.
I have always liked the old Redfish 14's, I think Native makes them now.

totally agree with what y'all have said.it was the price range and the weight thing with me. if i get a good bit of $$$ from UNCLE SAM this year i am looking at another OK either their prowler or a terta would like a ultra 4.3 but at $1200 its out of my reach.

i got a call from a friend on monday that he was selling his prowler/trident 13 for cheap! lime green none the less! lol
i went ahead and picked it up that day. cant wait to get it out and slime it all up! i am looking for seat options now and am thinking that a but pad like skwoosh might be the way to go along with a standard seat for back support.
