I am a nut about top water fishing even though reds have a hard time getting the hooks. The strike is the fun for me, and I love to throw the Mama Dog or smaller series. On occasion, up to four strikes have occured on one cast, as it drives the fish crazy. After the strikes, throw a soft bait or spoon and the agitated red would hit it as soon as it hit the water My standard is white side with chartruse or yellow top and bottom. Recently I used one in a buff color with mirrored sides and after a few trips lost the mirrored surfaces due to the many fish which hit it. Reds, trout, and even pinfish size fish knocked it all over the water. I gave one to a fellow camper and he worked on the trout with it as it outfished the DOA which was his favorite before trying the lure. Anybody up here as sold on the lures as I am?

I love fishing my top water lures too. I have no absolute color or manufacturer, but do like the spook one knockers (bone color), spook jr (trout pattern), and the she dog ( white/red head and black/yellow head). The badonkadonks are good too.

If your having trouble getting hookups with reds, there are several things you can do, go to a larger hook on the back, run a 12" piece of flouro carbon leader on the back of the Lure, and attach a fly of some sort which will be easier for the red to inhale. Be creative!
