"A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work" ... But it's even better when the fishing is good. I had to drive down to Flagler Beach Florida yesterday and I figured what the heck I'll bring the yak. I only got to go out for a couple of hours but I had a blast. I am new to kayak fishing and I am hooked. For me it was my most successful trip in my yak. 5 reds in all, the largest was 23 and a 1/2 inches. I have to work on my artificials I ran into a some schools of bait fish being slammed by something and I could not get them to bite. I threw yozuris, top water plugs, zmans, storms and the kitchen sink. It was about 30 minutes of pure excitement followed by the frustration of not getting to hook in to one of them. I could not tell what was hitting the bait fish but they where of decent size. Anyone have a go to for this situation? After the top water action calmed down I followed the bait into a cove full of oyster beds, mangroves and grass. And that is where the magic happened. I caught all my fish off of mud minnows and shrimp. The larger reds I caught where on mud minnows. I had one line out with live bait while I practiced throwing artificials. I had one strike on a zman but that was it for artificials. Every time I go out (only four times) I learn something new and have a great time. I would like to thank everyone who showed at the spring bash tournament and allowed me to pick there brains. I can't wait for the next one.
