Took my PA14 out on Saturday to tryout my new Lowrance Elite 4 HDI. Launched from the beach on the inside of Jekyll Island and eventually headed west for a mile across the ICW. Water at the beach was obviously shallow and at low tide the deepest return I saw in the channel was about 22 feet.
I had a clean bottom with suspended fish all the way across and back... nothing exciting. But on the way over and on the way back, I saw the bottom littered with returns around the channel where it went from 22' to 16'. Being pretty new to salt, I had no idea what it could be but figured baitfish or whiting or something! I can't remember exactly how far they were off the bottom but it was like 3-4 feet. These were not arcs either.
I guess I'm dumb that it didn't occur to me until this morning that they may have been shrimp.
It looked like a subtle tapered contour rather than a sharp drop off but they were definitely on that slope to the deepest water.
Can I get some feed back or opinions on this? I had a camera and kick myself for not taking a picture.
Would this have been a good place to try fishing or just an interesting find?

I know pretty much the area your talking about, those may have been bait fish or shrimp staying in the warmer waters. That is a famous spot for shark fishing off that drop off and the big big 50 ft drop off closer to the pier. I personally stay away from fishing deep deep waters like that unless I'm targeting other species than reds or trout. Unless it's bull reds. But give it a shot, you never know until you try. Might hold some Spanish or even king mackerel later in the summer or even a cobia or 2. You just never know in deep salty waters

Probably bait (shrimp, mullet, or small staged fish).
